Conditions
Cataract
Cataract is a very common eye condition which causes the lens inside your eye to become cloudy over time. Cataracts usually begin in later life and you may notice your vision becoming gradually more misty as they develop.
Retinal Detachment
A retinal detachment occurs when the light sensitive retina detaches from the layer of blood vessels at the back of the eyeball. If not treated promptly it can cause permanent loss of vision in the affected eye.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is caused by damage to the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. If left untreated it can cause significant loss of vision. The most common type of glaucoma is caused by a build up of the aqueous humour fluid in the front of the eye.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes can cause changes to the blood vessels inside the eyeball, leading to damage and loss of vision. Some forms of diabetic retinopathy just require monitoring, whilst more serious changes require treatment.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related Macular Degeneration, also known as 'AMD', is the most common cause of visual loss in the developed world. It tends to cause a gradual loss of central vision, but can sometimes come on quite suddenly.
Epiretinal Membrane
Sometimes a membrane forms on the surface of the retina inside the eye. As this film contracts, it can distort your vision and may need to be surgically removed by peeling it away from the retina.
Macular Hole
If a hole develops in the central macula area of the retina, it often requires surgery to repair the damage and prevent further visual loss.
Pterygium
Pterygium is a white or pinkish fleshy growth that develops across the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eyeball). This condition often affects people who spend a lot of time outside in the sun, or who have lived in hot and dusty climates.
